Deschutes Abyss

Deschutes Abyss 2011

The Denver Westward lists Deschutes Abyss as one of ten beer that "Will make you a man...If they don't kill you first." Well our mostly female staff would argue about whether that actually makes you tougher or not but the fact remains that this stout is big, bold and amazing.

A deep, dark Imperial Stout, The Abyss has almost immeasurable depth and complexity. Hints of molasses, licorice and other alluring flavors make it something not just to quaff, but contemplate.

This beer would keep for years but I don't think that it will last that long at The Bayou

New(ish) Lagunitas Beers

Ok, it's confession time. We actually received these beers several weeks ago but it was right when we received all our holiday beers as well. They have been available to those in the know (aka those watching the website) and we have been secretly drinking quite a few ourselves. Well, it's time to let the cat out of the bag and share these fine beers with everyone.

Lagunitas Doppel Weizen

A very limited beer which has only been brewed this one time. At 9% ABV this classic German-Style Doppel Weizen has a classic spicy and banana flavor filled with big malt and alcohol.

Currently scoring 96 points on ratebeer.com.

It doesn't look like they are brewing it again this upcoming season so this is your one chance to try this beer for the foreseeable future.

Lagunitas Little Sumpin Wild

Another Big Sister of the Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale.... Lots of Malted Wheat for a Curious Malt Complexity & and Fermented with A Belgian Yeast strain leaving it Huge in Flavor and Satisfaction.

Despite the name, this is actually not a wild fermented beer. That said, it is a fantastic belgian golden ale very similar to duvel or westmalle tripel.

Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye

Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye

Sierra Nevada has brewed this Rye beer for several years but it has only been available on draft at their taproom. After all those years they have finally decided to release this beer to the unwashed and we have gotten our hands on it.

Our good friend Mikey at utahbeer.blogspot.com gives it the following review "The nose is earthy and malty with piney resins. The flavor starts piney with a complex grainy malt character. Next comes hints of cocoa and a mild rye spiciness. The finish is dry and piney."

Ratebeer.com is giving it 98 points. http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/sierra-nevada-ruthless-rye-ipa/159987/

Urthel Samaranth Quadrinium

Urthel Samaranth 12 Quadrium Ale is perhaps the most undiscovered gem on our beer menu. Dusky, light brown in color with a slightly off-white foam. In the nose, it's sweet and faintly spicy with notes of dried fruit, nuts, chocolate and marzipan.

On the palate, it's big and bold, massively malty and slightly warming from the 11.5% alcohol by volume. It is long and shockingly dry in the finish.

RateBeer.com gives Samaranth 96 out of 100 points while Beer Advocate gives it a solid A-.

While not technically brewed for the holidays, this malty quad is a perfect warming beer for these colder winter days.

300ml 9-

Red Rock Secale and Dogfish Head Life and Limb

The first on our list is Red Rock Brewing's Secale.
Se-cal-le, Latin for rye, is a German style double bock brewed with this all too underappreciate grain, then lagered in High West Rye Whiskey barrels for 6 months. This unique brew, developed by Red Rock head brewer Kevin Templin and High West distiller Brendan Coyle is the first collaboration
between the two since working together at Red Rock in 2006.
The second beer is a colaboration brew between Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada called Life and Limb.
Life & Limb is a 10% ABV strong, dark beer brewed using pure maple syrup from Massachusetts and bottle conditioned using birch syrup from Alaska.

2011 Holiday Beers now Available

Rare and Limited Holiday Beers

Nearly all of our 2011 holiday beer order has arrived. We are still awaiting delivery on four of them but they should be arriving soon. Supplies are limited and we will not be able to place another order until next year so don't wait too long to give them a try.

Ølfabrikken (The Beer Factory) is a small experimental brewery on the vibrant Danish beer scene.
Coming Soon
An 11% Belgian quadruple style ale. Delicious with big flavors of cookie dough, chocolate, figs and spice. The addition of actual cocoa powder makes this one incredibly special.

The dedicated guys at Mikkeller have simply outdone themselves with this holiday version of a Baltic Porter. Earthy and hoppy with hits of coffee, dark fruit and a full roastiness. A great example of the new hoppy Belgian artisan beer movement.

Coming Soon
Apparently Struise decided to f**k with the Tsjeeses. They took 4 barrels of Tsjeeses and gave it a 6 month aging on oak. How we managed to get some is still a mystery.

Deschutes Black Butte XXIII

Deschutes Black Butte porter is always a favorite. Nice roast and chocolate notes. Well, Deschutes decided that on their birthday each year they would release an imperial version of this already wonderful porter.

This years release XXIII is most certainly the best version we have ever had: Orange zest from Seville spanish oranges, artisinal chocolate nibs from Theo and Pasilla Negra Chillies fill your mouth with such amazing flavors that you not want to put this beer down. The 11% ABV however might just put YOU down.

Boulevard Collaboration #2 & Deschutes Conflux

We have received our shipment of Boulevard Collaboration #2 and can finally announce that we have both Deschutes' and Boulevard's versions of this excellent collaboration beer.

Combining Boulevard’s expertise at making Belgian-style witbiers with Deschutes’ skill at brewing hop-forward ales, this beer puts a new spin on the idea of collaborative brewing. Working from a single recipe, brewmasters Steven Pauwels of Boulevard and Larry Sidor of Deschutes have produced two separate beers, more than 1,600 miles apart.

Despite the beer’s shared recipe, each of the two versions possess a unique identity, reflected in their naming and packaging. Boulevard’s half of the equation is christened Collaboration #2, Deschutes’ effort is the second beer in their new Conflux collaboration series.

One of the most unique characteristics of Collaboration #2 is its aroma. Sage and lemongrass were added to the vessels post-fermentation, as well as three varieties of hops, all of which contribute solely to aromatics. The Belgian-style yeast strain adds hints of bubblegum and clove. The other main feature that should be specifically pointed out to consumers is the beer’s lingering hang. It is no more bitter than a regular I.P.A., but something about the combination of herbs and hops creates an almost spicy, peppery quality in the finish.

Draft Magazine just listed Boulevard's version of this collaboration as one of their top 25 beers. Both these beers are in very limited supply.

Deschutes' The Stoic

Deschutes Brewery’s newest enterprise, The Stoic, a Belgian-style Quadruple, has finally arrived! Its five year odyssey from experimental beer to coveted Reserve Series eminence is complete.

"The finest Belgian brewing philosophies have inspired this contribution to the American Quadruple scene, mingling the four virtues of compelling ingredients, nuanced flavor, sound body, and a composed harmony. The Stoic requires discovery of the truth of the matter."

Deschutes brewers describe a simple recipe ironically hard to brew. The classic malt bill is all Pilsner malt. Hallartau, Czech Saaz, and Northern Brewer hops sustain a deftly understated flavor. Belgian candy sugars add impact and the smooth body required of any Belgian-style brew worth quaffing. A healthy portion of pomegranate molasses casts an opulent, tangy twist, while a vintage Belgian yeast strain provides a solid reference point. Pinot Noir and Rye Whiskey barrel-aging suggest notes of spice, citrus, pepper, vanilla, and toasted caramel like offerings to the ancients.

"Like the ancients, we employ reason to live well. Reason demands truth. Truth invites experience. Unraveling the intricacies of The Stoic reveals a determined pursuit of that spirited endeavor. Ergo…it is very reasonable to live well when experiencing The Stoic."

Sour and Wild Ales Fest Sunday Nov 6th

The Bayou will be hosting our first ever mini-beer festival this Sunday November 6th at 5:00 pm. The theme of the first festival is Sour and Wild Ales. Many very knowledgeable beer folks (including our own Mark Alston) will be here to help guide you through these interesting and complex beers.

Here is how the festival will work. For $25 you will get a wrist band and a 20 beer punch card that will enable you to sample all the festival beers. As this event is all about sampling high quality beers in a responsible manner, all samples will be served in 2 ounce pours. You must have both the wrist band and the punch card to be served. No sharing with non-participants!!! Anyone found sharing beer with people without a wrist band will have their wrist band removed and they will be barred from continued participation. You may however, share freely with other participants. We will cease opening new bottles around 9:30 pm so don't show up too late.

Be advised that, due to Utah liquor laws and common sense safety, we will not be able to continue serving "intoxicated" people so please take it easy.

You are welcome to eat dinner or appetizers at a table or the bar but food is not included in the festival fee. Due to the fact that this is our first mini-fest and we have no idea how busy we will be, we will not be able to guarantee seating and tables will be available only for those planning on eating.

Here are the beers we will be pouring at the fest:
Jolly Pumpkin Bam Biere
Jolly Pumpkin Bam Noir
Jolly Pumpkin E.S. Bam
Jolly Pumpkin Weizen Bam
Jolly Pumpkin La Parcela
Deschutes Dissident
Mikkeller USAlive
Squatters 529
Squatters Fifth Element
Bacchus
Orval
Boulevard Saison-Brett
Boulevard Tank 7
De Ranke XX Bitter
Lindemans Faro
Lindemans Cuvee Rene

Quantities of some of these beers are quite limited so we cannot guarantee their lasting throughout the entire fest.

If sour and wild ales are not your bag baby don't worry. We plan on continuing our beer fests on a semi-regular basis with varying themes each time.

Mikkeller Barrel Aged Chipotle Porter (Texas Ranger)

We just received this amazing new beer from Mikkeller.
This porter has a full roasted malt flavor with the traditional chocolate and roast coffee notes. Add to that wonderful hints of vanilla and a slight smoke character from the chipotle finishing with an amazing chili flavor with very low heat. Mikkeller then took this already great beer and aged it in Speyside whisky barrels to add just that extra bit of complexity. A new favorite from one of my favorite breweries.
Don't just take my word for it though.
Ratebeer.com gives it 99 out of 100 points
Brew Dog Dogma

Our latest beer to arrive from BrewDog is Dogma. This crazy beer is brewed with guarana, poppy seeds and kola nut all blended together with Scottish heather honey. A conspiracy of transcontinental ingredients infused with some devastatingly BrewDog imaginative thinking.

Dogma was originally named Speedball after it's unique concotion of stimulants and depressants. The Kola Nut and Guruana are stimulants and the hops and poppy depressants. The TTB (Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau) however nixed the name Speedball quite quickly. So, upon U.S. soil it is now called Dogma. If you don't get the name change think about it for a while (oh, and don't forget to vote).

Only 60 bottles of Dogma arrived at The Bayou's so don't wait too long to give it a try.

New Beer from Epic

Epic BBBEpic has just released their latest new beers. I know, I know... it's beer hours at least since Epic released a new beer. JK guys ;-)

#1 on the new releases is the Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout. Perhaps you remember the Jack Mormon Stout they recently released. Quite tasty and apparenty too offensive to actually sell in the state liquor stores. Well, proving that they are equal opportunity offenders, here comes the Baptist.

At 11.7% ABV this Imperial Stout is flavored with coffee and cocoa nibs and aged in bourbon barrels.

Also arriving today is Epic's Pro-Am beer Festivious Scotch Ale. Brewed in colaboration with local homebrewer Mike Hahn (long time friend of The Bayou and Beer Nut's Mark Alston) this Scotch Ale should be great.

If you are not familiar with the Pro-Am beers here's the scoop. The Great American Beer Festival has introduced a new category in their competition for beers brewed using a local homebrewers recipe with that homebrewer. Several local breweries have jumped in to this program and have produced some amazing beers. We still have Uinta's Schwartz Pro-Am beer which was brewed withTravis Grimm's.

Tenaya Creek in the house

We just received a shipment of beers from the great Las Vegas brewery Tenaya Creek. Fortunately for us, it is a total myth that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Tenaya Creek was established in 1999 by ex Utahn and Uinta brewer Tim Etter with his brothers and sisters. In early 1993, during his college days at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Tim's roommate introduced him to the art of making beer. From a hobby in the tiny apartment, a full time career started to blossom. Attendance at UC Davis in Northern California studying Fermentation Science was next, then back to Salt Lake City to work with a new start-up: Uinta Brewing Company. After enjoying tremendous success at Uinta, it was time to break away and create Teneya Creek Brewery.

Tim's beers are amazing and while he left Utah in order to produce them luckly for us he is bringing them back up for us to enjoy. I mean that literally as well, this order of ours was driven up to SLC by none other than Tim himself.

Hop Ride India Pale AleHop Ride India Pale Ale (7.2% alc/vol)…This beer is brewed using 2-Row, wheat, Vienna and caramel malts and is hopped with Summit’s for bittering and flavor and Ahtanum for aroma. This IPA was also dry-hopped, with Ahtanum, Challenger and Chinook hops. Tenaya Creek's IPA is an American style IPA that has a high amount of bitterness but is well balanced and very drinkable.

Calico Brown

Calico Brown Ale (5.6% alc/vol)…Light brown in color, this ale is quite malty while the hop flavor is generally lower than that of the other ales. Don't let that leave you thinking that this beer is boring. On the contrary, this is a great brown ale. Perfect for these cooling autumn nights.

Tandem Double IPA

Tandem Double India Pale Ale limited release (9.0% alc/vol) Didn't get enough hops or alcohol from Tenaya Creek's IPA? Give this Double IPA a try. While definately agressively hopped, this DIPA is incredibly drinkable and a superb addition to our ever growing list of double ipa's.

BrewDog beers in the house!

After a long, long wait we have finally received an order of BrewDog beers. Due to the recent buyout of Anchor Brewing by BrewDog the order took much longer than normal and we were only able to get 4 of their beers. Hopefully we will be able to add more in the future.

BrewDog 5AM Saint 7.00

Garnering a whopping 96 points out of 100 at ratebeer.com this 5% abv is often described as the best red ale around. I know that if I had to pick one desert island beer that this would be on the top of my list

Malts: Marris Otter, Crystal Malt Hops: Simcoe, Chinook, Nelson Sauvin, Centennial Twist: Loads of late hops and bucket-loads of dry hops

BrewDog Hardcore IPA 8.00

You thought 96 out of 100 points was impressive? Hardcore IPA is rated 99 points out of a hundred!

This Imperial/Double IPA is "hopped to hell, then dry-hopped to hell too."

According to BrewDog "This explicit ale has more hops and bitterness that any other beer brewed in the UK. This is an extreme beer rollercoaster for freaks, gypsies and international chess superstars."

All we know is that we are damned glad to finally get it in.

BrewDog Tokio 22.00

Holy crap! Tokio is an 18.2% "intergalactic fantastic oak aged" Imperial Stout. Make sure to bring some friends down with you to help drink and pay for this one.

This imperial stout is brewed with copious amounts of speciality malts, jasmine and cranberries. After fermentation BrewDog dry-hops this killer stout with a bucketload of their favourite hops before carefully ageing the beer on French toasted oak chips.

Yes, I know the bottle at the left says "Tokyo". The batch we received is from a previous naming of Tokio and trust me this is a good thing. This beer could be laid down for years with it's insane level of alcohol.

BrewDog Paradox Smokehead 22.00

This whisky cask aged imperial stout spends a full 6 months in cask before being bottled. It seems to me that there is quite a bit of whisky left in those casks as well. You won't easily forget this beer.

New Lagunitas Beers

The only thing better than spending a week judging and drinking beer is to come home to new beers!

New Lagunitas

We received two new Lagunitas beers while I was gone.

Undercover Investigation Shut-down Ale.

This oxymoronic 'Imperial Mild' commemorates Lagunitas 2005 St. Patricks Day party where hundreds of Laguinitas' friends showed up for a good time. It turns out that among these many friends were several undercover officers. Well, these officers spent the night trying to get someone to sell them some of Sonoma County's Finest. Lagunita's employees being the good folks they are wouldn't sell any but were willing to give it away for free. Anyway, a few people were busted for possesion and after a whole bunch of Lawyers and ATF stuff they were given a 20 day shut down to ship and sell beer. The Lagunitas gang used that time to make more beer and install a state-of-the-art bottling line that has made their beer better ever since.

Wilco Tango Foxtrot (WTF)

Described as a "Malty, Robust, Jobless Recovery Ale", WTF was originally planned on being called the "2010 Recovery Ale". Well, as you all know, things haven't worked out exactly like that and Lagunitas just had to say "WTF?" Anyway, this American Strong Ale might not help out the recovery but drinking it will certainly help you forget about it.

Idaho Beer Fest

First day back after judging the Mountain Brewers Festival in Idaho Falls. It was a great experience as usual and our Utah brewers did very well.

It was awesome to see so many Bayou fans at the actual fest. They don't call this festival the biggest Utah Beer Fest for nothing.

Mikey has a list of all the medals that Utah brewers won on his blog at http://utahbeer.blogspot.com

Judging the beer fest is an amazing exerience but seriously quite a bit of work. All the beers are presented blind (poured by the stewards in a different room) and it is always surprising to find out what beers you ended up giving medals to. It is nice when I find out that I gave a gold to a beer that turns out to be one of my favorite local beers. I didn't recognize Desert Edge's Mild ale in the medal round for that category but knew that the beer we were drinking deserved gold. Same goes for Uinta's Barley Wine and Cutthroat neither of which I recognized blind but gave medals to just the same.

Here are the categories that I judged:

Day 1: American Blonde Ale, Scotch Ales, American Brown Ale, American Strong Pale Ale, American Barley Wine.

Day2: English Brown Ale, American Amber Ale, Double/Imperial India Pale Ale (ouch),Marzen Oktoberfest Medal Round, American Blonde Ale Medal Round, American IPA Semi-Finals.

Day3: Vienna Lager Medal Round, Ordinary Bitter Medal Round, American Amber Ale Medal Round, American Barley Wine Medal Round.
